The Jaxon Effect launches Falls woman's writing career

Niagara This Week - Niagara Falls

ByRichard Hutton

Gail DiStefano will be promoting her first novel, The Jaxon Effect: Contradictions and Confessions, at Chapters in St. Catharines Sunday, Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m.

From when she was a child, Gail DiStefano has had an active imagination, maybe even overactive.

"My mom used to say I have an overactive imagination," DiStefano said.

The Niagara Falls mortgage broker has put that trait to good use, putting pen to paper to create what has become her first novel, The Jaxon Effect: Contradictions and Confessions. It is the first book in a planned trilogy (DiStefano is already working in the second installment).

Oddly enough, DiStefano didn't always believe that she had what it took to put together a novel.

"That's the strange thing," said. "I never envisioned it."

DiStefano will be at Chapters in St. Catharines on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. to sign copies of her book and answer questions.

It seems creativity is something that runs in the family. DiStefano is mom to Christian, the child actor who is carving out a career path of his own in the movies.

But don't go looking for the DiStefano name on the book's cover. DiStefano has written The Jaxon Effect under a pen name — K.C. Michaels — that actually is inspired by her husband, Mike, and children, Kayla, Christian and Michael.

The Jaxon Effect: Contradictions and Confessions is complicated, the author said. The plot revolves around a male strip club owner, Jaxon Remington, and Kate Sims, an emergency room doctor. Kate experienced a breakup with her high school sweetheart on her wedding day while Remington simply doesn't do relationships, at least until he meets Kate.

"It's a one night stand that turns into more," DiStefano said. "It turns into more than either one of them expected. It's sort of a push-me, pull-you."

Remington, she said, has feelings for Kate but "he doesn't want to accept them."

He wants to be in control."

DiStefano said originally, the book was going to be a standalone but once she set about editing what was a much longer tome than the published version, she rethought the concept.

"It was a nice little package wrapped with a bow tie," she said. "But in my head I had all these of ideas of what could happen to them."

She then decided to make some changes — lots of them.

"I thought, 'I have to tear this apart,' " DiStefano said. "I took out stuff. I chopped it off at the knees."

With the second installment of the trilogy — The Jaxon Effect: Complications and Compromises — DiStefano said she has plans for books based on other characters, namely the male dancers at Jaxon's club.

"It will be called The Men of Remington’s," she said. Each dancer will be the subject of their own book.

Copies of the book will be available at Chapters and online at Amazon in eBook and paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!, August 2, 2013

This review is from: The Jaxon Effect: Contradictions and Confessions (Paperback)

First, I would like to thank the author for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. That being said, I loved it! It only hints at being "Fifty Shades of Grey", but was much better written and not so over the top. There is an actual story to this book with the sex being secondary and pretty tame. The threat to Kate's life and her relationship with Jaxon keeps the reader interested to the very end.

Dr. Kate Sims is portrayed as strong and intelligent most of the time. Jaxon has commitment issues but unlike Fifty Shades Christian, he is very likeable. The author even does a great job introducing supporting characters, who keep you interested enough to want to read about their future stories. Hopefully there will be books about Kelsey or Jade.

I cannot wait for Ms. Michaels to finish writing Book Two: The Jaxon Effect - Complications and Compromises.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waiting patiently for book #2!!, August 5, 2013

This review is from: The Jaxon Effect: Contradictions and Confessions (Paperback)

I received an ARC of this from the author in exchange for an honest review. When I read the synopsis I thought that it sounded like an intriguing story and it definitely is. This is also a real page turner as I read it in less then 24 hours.

I really enjoyed this story. Jaxon is a sexy alpha male that doesn't have to be bossy all the time to get his way which is different than some of the stories that I've been reading which is a nice change. Kate is a strong woman with a mind of her own that doesn't cave to Jaxon just because he says so...love that in a heroine. I felt that this was a very well written story where all of the characters were introduced in a way that you knew who they were and I can't wait to see what happens next. I will be waiting patiently for the next installment...

My first book is for sale..... Finally

As of today I am going to make an effort to Blog on a regular basis. That being said since I have not been blogging I will catch you up to speed. I do in fact finally have my book for sale. I decided to self publish with CreateSpace. My experience with them has been overall pretty positive with the exception with the time it takes to get anything done. However for quality and communication I do give them an A.

Now the extra service I paid for was the Cover Creator. I think a professionally designed cover is very important. I feel they delivered based on my specifications. I kind of wish I went with white font instead of gold but that would be my fault not theirs.

What I wanted to mention was converting the book from print to an ebook. They do offer this service for the low price of $69.00. I would have paid that with a smile on my face but the time it was going to take for it to be "Kindle Ready" was 3-4 weeks. I had read so many articles about the fact that during the conversion process a manuscript can get pretty ugly. The spacing and indents get pretty messed up. After reading through the kindle direct site I realized I could preview it before I offered it for sale so I decided to give it a go. I thought based on things I had read that I should use Calibre for conversion to mobi. It actually wasn't necessary but I am glad I did because it created a nice file with all my book files in one folder and saved it on my computer. I pulled my image from my Calibre file (Which it found on its own through metadata) and my original ms word manuscript. Presto I have an ebook. Now I think the fact that my manuscript was reformatted to perfection by CreateSpace was how I was able to avoid all of the problems people encounter. My spacing was perfect and my chapter headers came out great. Kindle told me in 12 hours I will have an ebook. This morning when I woke up and checked I do in fact have an ebook for sale. :)

Since I had a pretty easy time with Kindle I figured I would upload to Kobo Writing Life. KWL converts files to epub. This conversion had a few problems but nothing I couldn't live with or fix. With KWL you can actually edit in the preview. I had to re-center my chapter headers and I changed the font. I lost all of my paragraph indents but honestly I don't mind too much. I could have spent hours fixing that but I didn't (because I can barely use word, so everything program related takes me forever!) Everything seemed to run smooth until I had to set up my depository account info. Apparently there is an issue with me using a credit union instead of a major bank. I'm not positive that's the problem but I can't see what else it could be. I have to look into this today.

So now what do I do? I market the crap out of it. I am not the most organized person. I don't have a fool-proof plan. But I do have a desire and a passion so I'm going to fly by the seat of my pants and see if I can get my book out there.

I will post my Marketing efforts as they come. I have ordered 100 copies myself to use mainly as marketing tools. My mom however wants me to send her a dozen right away(signed of course) to sell to her friends. She is proud as a peacock of my accomplishment. She actually read a not so perfect draft version of my manuscript and she called to ask me when book two will be complete. I laughed because I'm only on Chapter 2.
